Synopsis :

Naho Takamiya’s first day of her sophomore year of high school is off to an uneasy start. After waking up late, she receives a strange letter addressed to her. However, the letter is from herself—10 years in the future! At first, Naho is skeptical of the note; yet, after witnessing several events described to take place, she realizes the letter really is from her 26-year-old self.

The note details that Naho’s future life is filled with regrets, and she hopes that her younger self can correct the mistakes that were made in the past. The letter also warns her to keep a close eye on the new transfer student, Kakeru Naruse. Naho must be especially careful in making decisions involving him, as Kakeru is not around in the future. With the letter as her guide, Naho now has the power to protect Kakeru before she comes to regret it once more.

ORANGE (2016) is a slice of life, drama and time travel shojou anime. It was based on a manga series that I have never read. Basically, it about a girl who gets a letter from her future self. It says she needs to save the life of someone she loves. Everything will unfold as the series goes by.

This is my fave from all. It’s appropriate with the animation and story. 🙂 It gives really the youthful vibes yet dramatic. 🙂

Naho Takamiya (高宮 菜穂)

Naho Takamiya

Naho is a kind, shy girl that has a crush on her classmate Kakeru. She receives a letter from her future self telling her that to watch over Kakeru closely as he is going to die. To avoid a lifetime of regret, Naho has to change her reserved disposition—but this is much easier said than done.

Kakeru Naruse (成瀬 翔)

Kakeru Naruse
Naho’s classmate, Kakeru is the boy that she likes. He has several issues regarding his family and he was apparently lonely until he joined Naho’s group of friends. It is revealed in the first chapter that he will die in an accident, but there is a possibility to change his future and the only one who can save him is Naho.

Hiroto Suwa (須和 弘人)

Hiroto Suwa
Suwa is Naho and Kakeru’s classmate and friend. He is very energetic and outgoing and he loves to hang out with his friends. He likes Naho but knows she likes Kakeru, so he supports them both. Suwa will become a very important person to her in her future, but 16-year-old Naho doesn’t know yet.

Azusa Murasaka (村坂 あずさ)

Azusa Murasaka

Asuza is the most energetic among the group of friends. She likes telling jokes. She always brings bread to her friends because her dad is a baker. She likes to bully Hagita most of the time.

Saku Hagita (萩田 朔)
Saku Hagita

Hagita is a regular student in Nagano who becomes very good friends with Kakeru. While he is not outgoing or charismatic, Hagita has a profound determination and intelligence. Hagita is a very big fan of reading manga and watching the television show ‘Yuugata Get’. Later in the story, Hagita even goes as far as to buy Kakeru manga for his birthday. Throughout the story, subtle comments and interactions hint at an affection Hagita holds for Murasaka and in the future time line Hagita is married to Murasaka.

Takako Chino (茅野 貴子)
Takako Chino

Takako is one of Naho’s friends. She’s a little boyish.

Slow paced —- yet appropriate with the genre.

Comments and Suggestion :

I never thought of the topic of “Depression” will be shown in an animation series. Orange was able to give justice to it. At first I only thought of it as a shoujo, time travel or romance anime but there is more into that. It feels a bit philosophical and psychological too as I go through watching.

I was also curious about the title of the anime,”ORANGE”.  I know Naho and Suwa’s hair color is orange but of course that’s too shallow. Then when I got to watch where Naho chose orange juice for a drink then I just realize maybe that’s it. That’s after Kakeru went out with another girl. The way she felt that moment is like the taste of an orange — sweet, sour, and sorrowful.

It reminds me of Honey & Clover and Kimi Ni Todoke without the time travel.  I felt the same vibes of the school life, youth , friendship and love.  I am used to watching this kind of genre ever since. This types are also easy to be made as live action.

What made me to watch more is my curiosity about who sent this “Letter from the Future”. It made me say that this is not your ordinary slice of life anime.  In the first few episodes, it is focus on how Naho follows the request on the letter that she has received. She was surprised to see every truth happening on what exactly is written in the letter. It gave me some creeps at first.  At the same time, I was also excited on how she will change the past by following everything in the letter. I was relieved when Suwa confessed that he received a letter too until the whole gang has letters received as well.

One asset of this series is the development and plethora of characters. I look at them like a palette representing different colors but when combined can produce a beautiful masterpiece.  Each one of them has something to do the story.  My favorite character is Suwa. 🙂 He’s manly, dependable and genuine. Though she has many girls admirers, his eyes is still on Naho.  He’s approachable and  ready to help if there is conflict.

Do I ship Suwa x Naho or Kakeru x Naho?

Since I already mentioned that I like Suwa more, I ship Suwa x Naho. I know that the future is just right. 🙂 I have nothing against with Kakeru. I just find him too drown with the past.  I actually thought of him needing a professional help. He’s lucky to have good friends. Naho has a weak personality. So, I think she needs someone strong, optimistic and manly.  Even so, Naho still prefers Kakeru in the story. He might be more handsome in appearance and gentle. Okay. we can’t force love. I don’t want to explain anymore. It’s Naho’s choice anyway so the story goes for Kakeru x Naho.

What are some weak points I find in the story? Too much of saving Kakeru and Kakeru’s too much negativity.  I understand that the story goes around with saving Kakeru from suicide yet it can be that exaggerated. I want to see Kakeru trying to help himself as well.  I also  find Naho as the female lead a little lame. I actually prefer strong female lead that can punch guys. Haha.. Sorry Naho! Though, I love how feminine you are like Sawako of Kimi Ni Todoke.

Though I haven’t read the manga, I don’t know if the anime includes everything. As far as the anime is concerned, I appreciate the drama and beauty of unending friendships. 🙂

Recommend to shojou, slice of life and drama fanatics!
