Kimi No Na Wa -君の名は。(2016) : Anime Movie Review

The story is set one month after a comet has fallen for the first time in a thousand years in Japan. Mitsuha, a high school girl living in the countryside, wants to live in the city because she is tired of life in the country. Then, there’s Taki. He’s a high school student living in Tokyo with his friends while working as a part-timer at an Italian restaurant. He also has a strong interest in fine arts involving architecture. One day, Mitsuha dreams of herself as a young man. On the other hand, Taki also has a dream where he is a female student attending high school in the countryside. What’s the secret behind their dreams?

Kimi No Na Wa -君の名は。(2016) is  a science fiction – mystery movie anime. It’s a story of Taki and Mitsuha switching bodies through dreaming. Can they actually meet in the end and solve this mystery?

No Doubt. Kimi no na wa’s animation is crafted beautifully. It reminds me of how I admired Hyouka’s animation in terms of scenery drawing, water color effect and dramatic vibes.  Visual wise it’s really thumbs up for me!

Comments and Suggestions:

Currently, Kimi no Na Wa  becomes trending in social media. I discovered it when Tricia Gosingtian (my fave blogger) tweeted about it. I also read some facts about it’s rating in Japan.  Here’s what I got :

Makoto Shinkai’s anime movie titled Kimi No Na Wa broke box office records in Japan. According to Mobile & Apps, the movie held the top spot for over six weeks since its release in Aug. 26. Moreover, the source notes that Kimi No Na Wa holds the record of being the “sixth top-grossing Japanese film and the fifth Japanese animation film in history.” In addition, the publication reports that this is the only anime film in the top five slot that was not created by StudioGhibli. –

What convinced me to watch this movie is for finding the reason why it has so many recommendations and rated that high this 2016. I watched the trailer. It was really a “tease” that made me want to see more of it. Then, I decided to watch the whole film and make a review.

Before I actually drafted this review, I find it really challenging . Challenging in the sense that I can’t just write a review at ease and publish it. I made time to read or even watch other anime reviewers first just to check if we think the same way. There’s some sort of pressure because almost everyone in the world of reviewing anime  made a detailed and justifying commentaries.  I just want to make sure that I will point out the ideas in the story in an explicit way though I find it bizarre. A Beautiful Bizarre? May I say.

The Plot is indeed unique for an anime’ film. It was trying to offer a “Slice of Life” brand. Take it from the scenery of autumn leaves falling down, the fly of comet in the night sky, busy city of Tokyo and so on about the typical life scenario are all present. Then it transitioned into an extra ordinary way supported by the plot. The switching of bodies  with our two main characters Taki and Mitsuha who are having a very different lifestyle and personality is not really new to me. I already watched SECRET GARDEN (korean drama) which has that same plot. Same thing, it became a hit. People will always buy into something out of this world because most of us wants to escape reality and wants to see how can impossible things be possible. Fantasy genres feeds it to us. 🙂

I find Kimi no Na Wa way more dramatic and mysterious because of this “comet tragedy”. That made me feel the suspense of watching it. Please mind the timeline also when you are watching this. I was confused with this part because how come you can switch with someone existed 3 years ago. I even asked myself if this some sort of ghost story? (Sorry, I don’t have plans to give spoilers. Haha!) Forgetting is also an issue here. Here’s the thing in the story, it’s like DREAMS vs. REALITY = DREAMS + REALITY. I even made an equation. It’s a co-existence of DREAMS and REALITY yet contradicting. It meets half way out of a miracle. In reality, when we sleep and wake up we forget or remember what we dream about last night. It’s the same deal when they switch bodies. They can’t contain the memory fully about it but they are aware that it happened for real.

Is this real?
Hint : they actually use LINE CHAT APP here… #noticed

I felt the drama when they are both longing to remember who’s this other person whom I miraculously encounter. Who’s this person? Why I can’t remember?  I also don’t like to forget a person who has become so dear to me and a person who has become my other half. The mutual desire to meet each other in a normal way  unravels slowly as the story progress. I love how it was executed. It’s not your sugar-coated high-school romance anime. It’s blended with maturity and mystery that made me feel enthralled to digest more of the story. I even had this “desire” to let them meet already NORMALLY! COME ON! Yet… the ending didn’t really satisfy me. 😦 I suggest that the ending should be like giving them a chance to meet and recover memories just a redemption to the suspense given in the climax.

Nevertheless, I must say Kimi no na wa deserves the top spot. As I look into Shinakai’s works, he is really well -known to produce masterpiece. It’s not really a surprise. This type of genre is his forte.  Truly, Kimi no Na Wa is a worth watching.. ❤

  1. This is by far one of the best animated films I’ve seen so far, seconded by this company’s other project called Kotonoha no Niwa. It’s true that the sceneries were wonderfully crafted- and so does the character development, and the anime itself. Thank you so much for sharing this, Lovely. RADWIMPS stole my heart (OST band) dating back 2010, and still slays it 6 years later. Looking forward for International release of Koe no Katachi! ❤

  2. I super loved Kimi No Na Wa ❤ I can so relate to you I had the same feeling when they almost couldn't remember each other maybe it was because of the time difference or travel and I almost wept when I saw he wrote I love you on her palm. This has to be one of the best anime movies I have watched indeed the animation was super fine! When the comet falls on earth and the intensity in her eyes the sound effect was completely amazing! I was currently on an Anime binge so really trying to find new ones to watch. But this one has my heart forever! ❤

    1. Wow..! That’s so good to hear.
I think Kimi No Nawa impressed me well.
Not only the story but the visuals too. 😀
I think I cried on that part.
Not the conventional love story. Enchanting. 😀

      1. Exactly, even the concept that they fell in love with each other by being literally in the bodies of one another, falling for their personalities and lifestyle is so unconventional that way.
